Why Genius Hour?

Blog Post #1

Genius Hour, also known as 20 Time, is a school project where students spend 20% of their class time working on any project of their choice. We have decided to make a documentary that illustrates the effects of distracted driving. We have chosen this project because many of our friends and family members have been affected by distracted driving, and we believe that we can inform others in order to prevent accidents from occurring in the future. In order to achieve this, we are asking our audience members, "Is it Worth It?" Through this documentary, we hope to tell stories of past accidents to emotionally draw in our audience and show them how their choices can effect themselves and other people.

Our goal is to complete this documentary by its due date, including the filming and editing. We also hope to get this documentary shown in the Health and Driver's Education class at our school. We hope to be done filming by the end of March and early April, giving us time to edit and have the project done by the beginning of June- by finishing the tasks by their allotted time, we will be able to measure our progress and achievements.

  1. This is an enduring project, but I think you guys can do it. It sounds like you have a clear vision of what direction you want to head in and even know what you are going to do with the end result. I love that you chose to film about this topic because it is one of the most relatable things to teenagers today. In terms of planning, have you already asked specific people willing to be interviewed? What means will you take to create this documentary, i.e., how will you balance filming and editing with your busy schedules? In addition, I would encourage that you get a wide range of interviewees - students, their parents, teachers, doctors who conducted surgeries on patients involved in car accidents, and even policemen. I can't wait to see the final product! Good luck!

  2. I like this idea because many drivers in America are often careless and either text while driving or perform other activities that distract them while driving. On top of this, we also learned that most Americans are sleep deprived and this also affects driving ability. I believe a program like this can bring awareness and prevent future accidents which help save lives and benefit others

  3. This concept is quite creative and allows suck a huge insight to what we, as teenagers, can be careless enough not to consider. These dangers that can be a result from not knowing about how drastic it can be. I do have one piece of advice, the project seems to effect you in a way of emotional closeness and it would be a good idea to talk to the school board and have a short assembly or even talk about on the announcements to bring light on the reality which we chose not to think about. It would also be interesting to hear almost like a interview of students, friends and family members have to say about this particular issue, if there is time of course.
    Keep up the good work.
