Facts about Distracted Driving

Distracted driving consists of being on the road while doing the following:

  • texting 
  • using a cellular device
  • eating or drinking
  • adjusting the music
  • using navigation
  • reading (maps)
  • talking to a passenger
......generally anything that doesn't allow your full attention to be on the road

Te following are statistics and facts about distracted driving and the consequences it entails:

  • 3,154 people were killed in motor vehicle accidents that involved distracted driving in 2013
  • 424,000 people were injured in motor vehicle accidents involving distracted driving in 2013
  • 10% of crashes for people under the age of 20 were reported to be caused by a distraction
  • at anytime during the day approximately 660,000 people are holding their cell-phones while driving 
  • driveres in their 20s make up 27% of the drivers in fatal distracted crashes
  • 3x more likely to get into a crash when distracted
  • 5 seconds is the average time a person is not looking at the road when they are texting, going 55mph that is enough time to cover the length of a football field
  • a quarter of teens text at least once each time they are driving in the car
  • estimated 1 in 4 drivers use their cellular device while driving
  • 11 teens die everyday as a result of texting while driving
  • texting while driving is 6x more likely to cause a crash than driving while intoxicated 
  • cell-phone use while driving leads to about 1.6 million accidents a year
