Are We Making Progress?

Blog Post #2

Throughout this process of making a documentary, we have discovered that many people have been affected by distracted driving... more than we even know about. We have learned that one time of distracted driving could change your whole life around. We have only interviewed one person so far in this process, but it has made us realize that every day of our life is very important. One setback so far may be the quality of our first interview. We filmed it outside on a windy day, so there may be a lot of background noise. We can solve this problem by editing out the excess noise and try to keep only the noise of the interviewee. We hope that this will be our only problem so far! Next, we need to set up more interviews. We plan to interview cops and hopefully find someone else in our school that has been affected by distracted driving. After the interviews are over, we must edit the clips all together to make one long, impacting documentary. We have learned, from listening to other people's stories, to not take life for granted. Appreciate what you have in the moment because you never know how it's going to change tomorrow.

  1. I like that you guys are taking this topic into your own hands and actually showing your peers what you will learn from talking to other people that have been in these types of situations. Our school, Saratoga High, always tries to spread the awareness of safety in the car and to not text and drive. The school even does a huge presentation of unsafe driving by placing a wrecked car out in the field to help get the point across that that sort of thing does happen in the world. Even though Saratoga High tries its best, it always feels like it misses the target when it comes to making it personal. The grim reaper that came to our school that one year did not help at all. What I like about what you guys are doing is the fact that you are students making a documentary about other students that have been affected by distracted driving and I applaud you for that! You mentioned in your post that you have interviewed one student so far. What I am wondering about is how are you going to be able to find more students that are willing to step up and tell their story since you said yourselves that there are many people in this school that have been in a car accident and you may not even know it.
Good luck with filming and I can't wait to see the final product of your footage!

  2. I think it's great that you're so involved in your project already. I know that with the workload from other classes it can be tough to put aside enough spare time to make significant progress, but it sounds like you're really on the right track--especially considering that you've already interviewed someone! I feel as if you'll have a very strong variety of sources to base your final project on if you continue in the direction that you're going (interviewing everyday people--e.g. students--and police officers alike). Out of curiosity, how did you find out about the experience the first person you interviewed had with distracted driving, and how will you find more people to talk to who are similarly connected to experiences with distracted driving?
